SAR1 is a 21/22-kDa GTP-binding protein involved in vesicular transport between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi. SAR1 can be included in the RAS superfamily of small GTP-binding proteins, but unlike other RAS and RAS-like proteins, SAR1 does not encode cysteine residues at the C-terminus and, thus, is not subject to prenylation.
