A search through the PROSITE Dictionary indicates that the protein encoded by this exon contains the heme-binding domain of cytochrome b6. This domain is centered around a conserved histidine (highlighted below). In plants, the cytochrome b6 genes are encoded by the chloroplast genome. The cytochrome b6 proteins of Z. mays and Black pine are 94% identical over the entire 215 a.a. This exon encodes a protein of just 189 residues in length that is only weakly similar to plant chloroplast b6 proteins and has no significant matches to the database. Therefore, the putative identification of this protein is labeled as a hypothetical protein containing a predicted heme-binding domain.
